Coconut Matting for Vegetation Establishment

Strol Coconut fibre matting reduces soil erosion on sloped sections and helps to stabilise your planting area.

New Zealand – the land of spectacular glaciers, rugged mountains, vast plains, native forests, miles of coastlines…and rolling hillsides. A landscape that attracts many tourists and keeps the locals busy hiking and exploring their own country. Having a lovely flat section allows for easy gardening, easy accessibility and dirt just sits in once place. What happens though, when your own slice of paradise is not exactly flat? While enjoying the view, it can be difficult to protect your landscape from erosion whilst vegetation becomes established.

So, what can you do to fix this?

Strol coconut fibre matting is the answer! Designed to help those sloped garden owners plant vegetation, and allow to establish, then biodegrade to nothing! Strol coconut matting is made from a coconut fibre and reinforced with a jute mesh which provides a matting that is ideal for protecting cut faces, exposed soils, and sloped banks from erosion. When first laid, the matting will assist with weed suppression and retain moisture, whilst insulating root zones to assist in vegetation growth. As the garden is established, the coconut fibre matting biodegrades, providing a mulch mat over time.

What are the benefits of Strol Coconut Fibre Matting?
  • 100% biodegradable – made from natural fibres
  • Very durable – the toughest natural fibre available to use as a matting material
  • Extremely absorbent – holds moisture from rain and is even able to draw the moisture from the air thus creating a moisture rich environment for plants in all climates
  • Easy to work with – Ideal for the (DIY) garden landscaping enthusiasts

How do I install Strol coconut fibre matting?

Strol coconut fibre matting is easy to install, just like installing weedmat. The ideal way to do this is to run the BioCoir matting down the slope and not across the slope. This will ensure that when heavy rain falls, the movement of soil under the coconut matting is limited and the matting will keep from sliding down the bank. Be sure to pin the BioCoir at approx. every square meter using a good landscape pin or staples to secure it. The Weedmat Pins (made from NZ spring steel) will work best when installing the matting in hard ground, or SquarePegs when installing on softer, flatter ground.

If you need to cut your coconut fibre matting, a sharp knife or heavy-duty kitchen scissors are the best tool for the job.

Coconut fibre matting can also be hydroseeded if required.

Summary

In summary, Strol coconut fibre matting is an easy to install, DIY, 100% biodegradable and sustainable solution to reducing soil erosion on your sloped planted areas. A great way to stabilise your banks, retain moisture, and suppress weeds, allowing your plants to have a good start in life until they take roots.
