SurePave Case Study | New Driveway for Arborist Wellington Limited
The challenge:

Dan required a driveway surface that could handle the demands of regular truck movements without the maintenance burden of concrete. Even commercial-grade concrete is prone to cracking under the strain of repeated turning and reversing, especially with vehicles weighing several tonnes. Water runoff was another concern. A solid concrete slab would create large volumes of surface water, eroding soil, increasing pressure on drains and potentially requiring additional stormwater infrastructure. This not only added cost but also conflicted with Dan’s preference for a more ecological solution.
The property was also surrounded by mature trees, which played an important part in its character and appeal. A concrete surface would cut off water and air to the roots, stressing the trees and threatening their long-term health. As an arborist, Dan understood the impact of poor ground conditions on root systems and was determined to choose a solution that would support the trees rather than compromise them.
By researching alternatives, Dan came across Strol SurePave. The system’s permeable design meant water could naturally filter through, reducing runoff and allowing the soil and tree roots beneath to stay healthy. Its certified 700 tonnes per square metre load capacity also provided confidence that the driveway would easily withstand the 9-tonne crane as well as the smaller vehicles. With this combination of strength, durability, and permeability, SurePave offered a solution that addressed both practical and environmental needs.
The solution:

With the product chosen, Dan set out a clear plan for the new layout. He designed a one-way driveway and turning circle, incorporating a grassed area in the centre to soften the overall look. Vehicles could enter directly from the street, loop around and exit without reversing, creating a smoother and safer traffic flow.
Easily laid and cut to shape, the SurePave panels were tied into the existing concrete driveway on one side. Railway sleepers framed the grassed island in the turning circle, while 200mm by 50mm timber lined the opposite edge. This ensured the panels were fully enclosed and held firmly in place once the aggregate was added.
The full installation covered approximately 150 square metres, including an extended section that formed a parking bay beside the house. This bay provided a safe, reinforced space for overnight parking, large enough for reversing vehicles. Even in winter, SurePave will stop puddling and rutting often caused by stationary vehicles left overnight.
The SurePave panels were filled with 20mm angular gravel, which locked into the panel structure to create a stable, maintenance-free surface. Unlike loose gravel, which quickly ruts under heavy use, the SurePave design keeps the material in place. With a gradient of less than five percent across the site, the panels did not require pinning. The strong edging and aggregate load held everything secure, resulting in a tidy and durable finish.
The result:

The new driveway has proven highly effective. The SurePave panels remain stable under constant vehicle use, including the 9-tonne crane. There has been no movement or rutting, even with frequent turning, reversing and loading. Smaller vehicles in the 2–2.5 tonne range are also easily accommodated, ensuring the driveway supports all aspects of his business’ daily operations.
By using SurePave, Dan eliminated issues with water pooling or runoff. Rain filters naturally through the surface into the soil below, reducing strain on stormwater drains and supporting the health of surrounding trees. To manage Wellington’s extreme weather, Dan added a 1m3 soak pit at the corner of the property, capturing any excess water for when it really rains.
Aesthetically, Dan feels the look, feel and value of his property has been greatly enhanced. The grassed centre of the turning circle breaks up the paved area, while river stones along the edges add detail and definition. Pathways near the house were finished with stones of a contrasting colour to distinguish them from the driveway, giving the property a clean, professional look without losing its residential feel.
From a business perspective, the project has been a success. The new driveway handles the demands of heavy equipment without the risk of cracking or ongoing maintenance. Vehicles can move in and out efficiently, and the reinforced parking bay provides a secure space for overnight storage. The system also protects established trees, aligning with Dan’s professional values and ensuring the property remains healthy and attractive.
Impressed by the results, Dan now plans to recommend SurePave to his landscaping clients. Having installed it himself and seen the benefits first-hand, he recognises its potential as a reliable, sustainable surface for driveways and heavy vehicle access. The ease of installation and long-term durability make it a practical option for a wide range of projects, from residential homes to small business depots.
For Arborist Wellington Limited, SurePave has delivered a driveway that is strong, environmentally responsible, and visually appealing. It provides the reliability required for daily business use while enhancing the overall property, giving Dan a solution that works today and sets a standard for future projects.
